Trauma often underlies the roots of addiction. Trauma can be physical, sexual or emotional and may take place over months or years depending on the environment.

As part of a comprehensive treatment, clients are often asked to do some sessions with EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing).  This form of therapy, developed by Francine Shapiro, is proven to be very effective in helping individuals who are "stuck" on a painful memory or traumatic incident.  Even though the trauma may have happened a long time in the past, we still feel it in our bodies and have a heightened response to it.

Trauma can inculcate beliefs about ourselves, others or the world around us that are unhelpful and not true.

The goal of EMDR is to assist individuals in releasing these beliefs and replacing them with more advantageous and adult messages that will serve us well.
