Most of us have a propensity to be "triggered" into an activated emotional state. And when in this place we can display reactions that go against who we want to be. Worse, we can hurt others significantly in these moments. Understanding the role our bodies and nervous system play in this is necessary to better understand how to regulate going forward.

Bad Habit or Addiction?

Clients often wonder if the behavior they are struggling with is just a bad "habit" or something more serious. While there is much overlap between habits and clinical addiction it can be helpful to describe some of the more definitive characteristics of a developing addiction. we look more at the specific attributes of addiction and how we can use them to learn more about our own behaviors.

While clinical addiction has a definitive genetic component we can also see predictable patterns from a person's life that contribute to the addiction formation and eventual loss of control. When we are regulated in our emotions we are better able to control our reactions and how we handle situations. But learning to stay centered isn’t easy and requires an understanding of how our nervous system works in conjunction with our emotions and thoughts.
